Our client is seeking a Technical Manager, Data Engineering with excellent leadership and technical qualifications to manage one of the data engineering teams. A successful technical manager will have a passion for creating high performing and scalable data systems and data warehouses on top of SQL Server and Vertica (Potentially Kafka, Spark, and Snowflake in the near future) as well as developing and leading high performing teams as part of a larger Data Engineering group.

The Technical Manager, Data Engineering is responsible for leading the development of new applications, enhancing existing products, and implementing new technologies, paradigms, and practices to provide the best solutions to our customers.  This includes technical design, architecture, and development of Cardlytics current and future systems. The solution should be innovative, but still exhibit best standards and practices, and integrate with the organization as a whole, in order to ensure performance, scalability and future-proofing. Leadership responsibilities will center on developing, leading and inspiring our software development teams to create world class software solutions.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of progressive leadership in software and/or data development
  • 5+ years of Data warehouses and ETL on MS SQL Server and SSIS
  • 2+ years of Vertica or other MPP database engines
  • Intimate knowledge of the internals of SQL Server and SSIS (Vertica is a big plus)
  • Knowledge in performance tuning queries and database systems
  • Big Pluses: Spark and Kafka with Kafka Streams applications (hands-on experience preferred), scala, JSON, Python, OOP, algorithms
  • Solid knowledge of optimization, concurrency, scale-up vs scale-out, DR, replication, security, etc.
  • Experience in the marketing or advertising fields and familiarity with pricing models, audience and engagement data is a huge plus

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop high performance teams focused on the development of new applications and features providing data, data warehouses, and data services built on SQL Server and Vertica to Data Engineering, Scrum software engineering, data science, analysts, product, management/executives, and other business teams
  • Work closely with the Technical Director and Engineering leadership to develop and deliver strategic business initiatives
  • Manage the build out of high performing and scalable data systems and pipelines
  • Lead the development and maintenance of high performing and scalable data systems, applications, and pipelines to process very large amounts of data from multiple sources, eventually in (near) real-time, and support thousands of concurrent users
  • Mentor team members on a day to day basis and conduct annual (or quarterly) and one-on-one recurring performance reviews of direct reports and team members
  • Grow the professional and technical competencies of team members through mentorship and code reviews, and be the go-to for technical direction and troubleshooting for your team
  • Lead teams focused on implementation of new technologies and practices to provide the best solutions to our customers
  • Provide oversight and guidance on technical design, architecture, and development of highly concurrent and scalable data applications
  • Identify opportunities and lead initiatives in work flow, processes, policies and standards to improve team function, efficiency, and consistency with rest of engineering
  • Enable Agile teams to build enterprise grade systems that are resilient, scalable, and secure based on industry best practices as well as the Technical Manager’s individual technical expertise
  • Work with business teams to create technical requirements and prioritize projects to bring tangible value to business but also harden infrastructure and deliver within time and scope
  • Proactively work with IT Operations, Prod Support, and Risk/Compliance to ensure delivered systems are of high quality, monitored, and comply with all necessary regulations and audit requirements
